“I’m so excited, and I just can’t hide it..” BLOODYHELL!!! I AM SO EXCITED!!! Christian O’Connell has invited me and Sharon to the XFM Breakfast Show 3rd birthday celebrations at the Hilton on Park Lane – how brilliant is that?! There are going to be lots of celebs there including Jack Dee, James Nesbitt and presumably the old regulars including Nick Frost and Simon Pegg. It’s a much sought after invitation and it came directly from the man himself – his precise wording was… “Please come along… love to see you both there. Christian”. Get in!! It’s just a shame Sharon won’t be able to make it over just in case we win a Golden Monkey Award. That would be too much excitement in one morning. And I guess I’m going to have to come into work in the afternoon… best set about booking the morning off. WOohoooO!

*Fringe 2004*

Well I never. It seems you can already pre-order the 2004 Festival Fringe programme, despite the fact that the acts themselves are probably either undecided as to whether they are going or at least haven't started writing their shows as yet.

We should also mention the fabulous Dan Clark of Electric Eel fame is appearing in Mad About Alice starting next Friday at 8.30pm on BBC1. It is unlikely that the show will need our support for it's success but still. It'll be nice to see his grinning face on the telly again. He is playing the character of Jason, and has been described by Heat Magazine's Boyd Hilton as both "great" and "Worth a look".

This is his character profile:

"Jason works in the office with Alice [Amanda Holden] and Ted [John Gordon Sinclair], assisting with the daily administration of the office.

Except that he really is no help at all and generally makes matters worse.

The only reason he retains his position is because Ted and Alice had to give him the job to repay a favour from his parents.

Ted says he is the bane of his life. Jason thinks that this is a good thing."

For some reason this hasn't been at all well publicised...

CHANNEL 4 is to screen a new six-part series from Perrier-winners Garth Marenghi, called Darkplace, from January 29.

Well, after a mammoth conversation combined with lack of sleep and delerium from drugs, we've decided to go to the entire 2004 Edinburgh Festival and this time we're going back to basics, back to our roots and are concentrating purely on Comedy Lounge. Neither of us will be working for anyone other than ourselves, unless Xfm or the BBC approach us. Then we might consider it. If the price is right.

So, that's that sorted and we've agreed that there's no going back. So at least we now both have something to look forward to. We're craving for the early days when we used to go and see shows together and didn't have to run home to review them and can just sit and watch and laugh and cry without taking mental notes. Back to the Mighty Boosh days although it is unlikely the Boosh will make a return to the festival.

This is the news. Happy now?

Our fantastic Mayor, Red Ken, has devised a brilliant websitewww.GetIntoLondonTheatre.co.uk that is offering cheap theatre and musical tickets. Jerry Springer tickets are only £25 instead of £50 so make sure you go along if you can. I am going to see whether I can drag some of my lot along, it really is quite brilliant, as I am sure we must have pointed out at least twenty times already.

In case you were wondering, it was neither my mum nor my brother who bought the dictaphone on Amazon yesterday. My mum was on the net last night when I got home and said there was one left so got me to order it on my card and she’d pay me back. Honestly, it takes all the magic out of your birthday when you have to buy your own present. So now I know exactly what my parents have got me – Sony dictaphone, Tony & Guy ceramic straighteners and the Boots No7 black bag gift set. I dare say my brother will have got me a few spare heads for the electric toothbrush he misguidedly got me for Xmas, or perhaps some overly expensive toothpaste, or maybe some floss. Obviously it’s the thought that counts and I’m really not expecting any presents other from my parents, my brother, a £10 gift token from my grandparents and something from my wish list from Sharon that she let slip the other night on the phone.
Today I have applied and been approved for yet another credit card. But don’t worry, I know what I’m doing. I think it is my utter boredom that is fuelling this desire to arse around with my money for the sake of making a few quid and having some pretty bits of plastic to look at. The cheeky cow who’s job I am covering gets in at 8am and this morning when I got in at 9am she’d left me a nice pile of stuff that should have been done earlier that she clearly couldn’t be arsed to do. Charming. Everyone in the department seems really nice and most of them say thank you if I happen to remember their name and put the right piece of paper on their desk, but there’s one moody bitch who told me that she normally gets her stuff earlier and can she in the future, so I kind of mumbled at her and I think she accepted the fact that when I was covering she’d get her bits of paper when I give her them and lump it. Like I care.

And relax. It’s H’s leaving drinks tonight and I have to make a concerted effort either not to drink or not to drink too much – and certainly not stay out late - what with having to drive up to Newcastle tomorrow. I’m not sure who’s going who I’ll know but after tonight I’ll only get to see H the day she flies when I escort her to Heathrow to make sure she gets on the plane. Other than having to say goodbye for six months I am quite looking forward to watching planes taking off and landing. You have to remember I have only ever flown three times and despite my hatred for flying, I find airports new, exciting and slightly scary places for me.

I am looking forward to going to Newcastle tomorrow. Obviously Friday isn’t going to be very nice but I should be ok as long as I don’t see my dad or my uncle crying – I was going to recite Peter Dibdin’s traffic lights song in my head but I don’t think that would be appropriate – I remember how upsetting my Grand-dad’s funeral was but then I was quite young and it was the first one I had ever been to – in fact, I’ve only had to go to two funerals so far in my life. The other was of my friend Melissa who died on 16 February 1997 from Meningitis because she was misdiagnosed and sent home from hospital. That was really, really horrible – I used to work evenings in a pub in Bromley when I was 18/19 and Melissa was a few years older. I hope not to go to many more in my lifetime. But, like I was saying, I am really looking forward to seeing my uncle again, and in particular seeing my dad and my uncle together again. It’ll be like a special edition of “Surprise Surprise”. Obviously living so far apart, they hardly ever get to see each other. They look very similar although my dad’s gone on a bit of a health drive over the last year or so, so his belly isn’t quite as big as my uncle’s! Then of course the big question will be popped on Saturday, which is also my aunt-to-be’s birthday.

I have so little sleep recently I reckon I could have won that Shattered programme with lovely Dermot O’Leary if I had entered. At least they get two hours sleep every night. And running round this building handing out bits of paper to people isn’t helping matters. I don’t think I’m going to make it to see Helena tonight – I just can’t face going to central London and I need to pack as I won’t be able to tomorrow and my feet are burning in my high heels cos I was unprepared for the amount of walking I would be required to do today. It’s H’s leaving drinks tomorrow so that should be fun and I will get to see her then, although there will be lots of other people around too. Hopefully I’ll be able to see her off at the airport next Sunday but we’ll have to see. I think I need to dig out that Berocca I bought in aid of National Blur Week. Either that or become addicted to coffee. Or just try and relax properly before trying to get to sleep and not stay up late watching Alan Partridge on UKG2. Seeings I am become a bit of a middle-aged hermit (I blame the weather and the lack of brain stimulation) I reckon I might try Ovaltine or Horlicks or whatever it is that the old people drink to get sleepy.

Did you watch Eastenders last night? It wasn’t particularly brilliant and this whole Janine and Barry thing is getting pretty boring but there was a quality scene last night. Pat and Natalie were sobbing their hearts out and asked Janine when the body would be back from Scotland cos they wanted to see him to say goodbye, at which point Janine got an urn out of a bag and pointed out that he was already back in Albert Square. She’d already had him cremated!!! I nearly fell off my chair in shock and from laughter. She really is an evil cow. (Obviously I understand that she is only a fictional character).

I saw the last episode of the Office the other night cos I missed it when it was on BBC1 over Xmas. It was odd and totally went against what everyone was expecting especially with David Brent potentially finding a woman and Tim and Dawn getting together. I found the woman liking David a bit unbelievable but I am glad Tm and Dawn had a happy ending cos that was believable. People can criticise it all they like and say what they think should have happened, but there are only two people who could have decided what happened and I really enjoyed it. Maybe it would have been slightly more believable if Dawn’s fiance had come back after her and beaten Tim up but then that might have happened when the cameras stopped rolling (although obviously I am aware that these are all only fictional characters).

Today I am covering the dullest job in the world while the girl who usually does it goes off and trains to do a slightly less boring job involving less walking. I have to check the printers and fax queues and then log swifts and get people to sign for them when I deliver them – not that I know who anyone is in this department so as you can imagine its an absolute joy. Basically she is a glorified post girl but at least it gives me something to do for a change. How dull, I think it’s just as well I’m out of here in just over four weeks. I might even consider taking a permanent job if it pays loads of cash and they let me have 3.5 weeks off in August. I dare say I’ll have to quit next July if I do go permanent…actually scrap that idea, temping is much better.

I’ve had to wait til 1.30pm to have my lunch, which is very annoying. And then I have to start again at 2pm. Don’t worry though, I’ll be claiming for no lunch all week this week – I’m doing 1.5 jobs at the same time and there are some really moany people who I have to give stuff to who prefer bits of paper to be put in a tray in front of them rather than on their desks, slightly to the side but near enough the tray that they can shut their moaning mouths and move them there themselves. Thank goodness I’ve got a day and a half off this week, its just a shame I have to go to a funeral instead.

I have added a dictaphone to my wish list so I can do some interviews and stop making excuses for the lack of issues so I sent the link to my mum and my brother and also told my mum it’s what I want for my birthday. I checked today and there are only 2 left in stock. There were 3 there yesterday so hopefully one of them has taken the massive hint I have dropped. I suspect there will be a lack of communication and I will end up with two.

Well, thanks to my friend not pre-booking cinema tickets for the Odeon West End and telling us the wrong time *and* turning up late, we didn’t get to see The Return Of The King. She suggested going to Marble Arch so the three of us began to make our way, but a combination of having left my glasses at home and already having a headache and not wanting to go all the way not having reserved tickets again, made me pipe up before we got to the tube and so we just went for a drink instead. I’ll have to go next weekend or one night the week after next. Or buy it on DVD when it comes out…

Spent the weekend surfing the net and working out which savings accounts to open and at which banks/building societies so as to get the best rates. I discovered that the best mini cash ISA is with Intelligent Finance so I will be opening one just as soon as I get myself sorted and actually get paid for the first time in ages. You’re only allowed £3,000 tax-free savings which is bloody ridiculous (not that I have £3,000 of my own money though). I don’t think there’s anything we’re not taxed for in this country. The Derbyshire Building Socety’s regular saver account is good – you get 2% net PA but if every month you deposit between £10 - £500, miss no more than one month’s payment and don’t make more than one withdrawl in a year, you get 4% instead. So I’m going to give that a go. I’ve also opened an account at ING which is about 3.38% no matter what you do. It’s going to get very confusing but it’s also exciting to have savings for the first time in almost 10 years.

I used to have about £500 when I was about 18 but HSBC got me into debt when I was at uni and in the second year I took a job working in the most horrible pub in a really rough part of Nottingham and it was unbearable so I ran out, rang my mum in tears and told her all about my credit card and student loans. I think I also had about £1000 from my Great Aunt when she died which went towards paying everything off. It was a really horrible time and would have been 10 times worse if my debt had included tuition fees, although student loans are much easier to pay back and don’t get you into any trouble. If you can’t afford to pay it back then you defer it but credit cards are evil, it’s just that I’ve had so much experience with them that I feel comfortable using them and having large balances. My student loans totalled about £4,500 when I left uni and I deferred them for a year or so but then decided to pay them back and get it out of the way. It’s about £80 a month, which is about £2.60 a day for all that fun at university, which I think is pretty good value. I think I’ve got another year or so to go and then I am a free woman.

I drove my dad’s car to my brother’s house yesterday in order to get accustomed to it before driving to Newcastle for my Grandma’s funeral. It was easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy. Makes me more desperate for a new car but I think that might be something to save up for and buy next year, maybe when my ISA matures. It was lovely putting my foot down and getting some acceleration and not having anyone cut me up just cos I am in a girl’s car. Lovely. And my dad managed not to play with the imaginary pedals like he used to when I was learning to drive. I am slowly getting over my Vectra addiction… they’re not the most reliable cars, despite how pretty and comfy they are.

I’ve not really made any new year resolutions other than to have more contact and see Suzanne more often. I could say I will do more exercise but that’s not going to happen. I do need to look for a new job soonish, one where I actually have something to do. I do like it here but I need more work to keep my tiny mind occupied. All I do is the odd trade amendment and look at stock recs. I’m not quite sure what that might be though. I think this year I need to sort myself out and do something. Helena is off travelling on 18 January and returns six months later so let’s see if I can do something of some worth by the time she returns. Again, I’m not sure what.

I am very bored today. No-one really has anything to do so we are all surfing the internet in full view our bosses, who are probably doing the same. As a result, I now have about 150 items on my Amazon wish list, most of them are just there to remind me that they exist if I ever have a spare £grand to waste on DVDs. I have also discovered that Monarch Of The Glen is available on DVD so I am going to ask for Play.com vouchers from my brother for my birthday so I can get them all. I am fairly sure I missed at least the first series (which I have just bought) so that will keep me entertained for about 6 hours and 30 minutes and by the time I get all four series it should pad out my DVD collection rather nicely. Likewise when I replace all my Father Ted videos. I really must hurry up and chose my TV so I can actually link up my DVD player in order to watch all these new things. I’ve also bought the new Travis album cos I’ve heard it live twice now, and also A-ha Homecoming Live at Vallhall. Stop laughing, A-ha are brilliant. If you remember I saw them in Wembley last October and they were fantastic. Don’t be so narrow-minded.

I shouldn’t really put this in case someone reads it who shouldn’t but, my mum sent me a text today saying “Guess who will be popping the question next Saturday in Newcastle?” If you know me or read this then I think it’s fairly obvious who she was referring to. How exciting!! So that’s another trip to Newcastle somewhere in the near future – I might as well live there, the number of times I’ve been since the end of the Festival. He was thinking of springing the wedding on her by surprise at the hotel in Warwick in April when we celebrate dad’s 60th but I have told my mum to talk him out of it cos I think it will detract from both occasions and the boys are playing golf all weekend so I’m not sure when he was thinking of squeezing in a wedding!! Might mean I get to practice being a bridesmaid before my brother’s wedding though. Although thinking about it that means I will have to wear a dress. Eurgh.

I am going to see Return Of The King tomorrow which I am very much looking forward to. I’ll make sure I don’t drink anything too near to the start cos I don’t want to have to go to the toilet and miss a crucial part of the story but then I imagine I’ll be pleased of having to get up and walk about by the end of it. Three and a half hours is an awful long time and I gather its quite sad at the end so given how emotional I have been for the past six months, I think I’d better take as many tissues as I can carry. I haven’t been to the cinema for ages, probably since the last Lord of the Rings film. I can’t really remember a huge amount of what has happened so far other than some vague recollection of talking trees, people with pointy ears and a bit of a fight, so that should make it even more interesting as I try and remember who all the characters are. I think it’s inevitable that they destroy the ring but I would imagine most of them die along the way – I’m fairly sure Gollom dies.

Pete has just told a stream of Dyslexic jokes… here is the best one.

Q Did you hear the one about the dyslexic devil worshipper?
A He sold his soul to Santa.

I must say I have really been enjoying the plethora of shows over Xmas and New Year in the “Top 100” genre particularly because I have been spotting Comedy friends such as Uncle Vinny, Eddie Brimson and Michael Legge – all of which should be on television all the time anyway because they are all brilliantly funny. Perhaps we could introduce a new digital channel – BBC Comedy Lounge to run alongside BBC Fist (our dedicated Lee and Herring channel). It’d be great and of course the voices introducing the shows would be Rich and Stew or me and Sharon.

I saw the new Anti-Smoking advert yesterday after hearing about it on the news. It looks absolutely bloody disgusting but I don’t suppose most smokers know what the link is between smoking and heart disease – most people think cancer is the main result of smoking (If only they could see their lungs outside of their bodies…they’d wonder how they could get them back inside there, so that they can respire…) And now they know that its because liquid fat spews out of their cancer sticks and clogs their arteries. Well, in a round about kind of way, its more to do with the thinning of the arteries which then become more permeable to lipids. It’s more shocking than the one with the babies, which I think is absolutely brilliant, but I think people are more likely to give up if they realise what its doing to their own bodies rather than children that don’t necessarily belong to them.

Here is a picture from the Australian version of the ad. It is bloody disgusting.

Going back to my previous musings about credit cards, I sat down last night and went through all my cards and calculated that including my overdraft I have combined credit of £35,000. That’s right, look impressed. Which is not only enough to buy a Vectra, I could get a bloody Merc instead! Obviously if I did that I’d have to pay an extortionate amount of interest cos only two of my cards have 0% on them but it’s nice to think that a new car isn’t completely out of my reach. Speaking of which, I am taking my dad’s car on a test drive on Sunday to practice before the big drive up to Newcastle on Thursday. Rock on. Although having said that, it’s not as big as the Vectra – that was a 2 litre engine and I think the Corolla is only a 1.6 or 1.8 litre. Oh well, I don’t mind slumming it if it means I get to drive someone else’s car. My brother and Sam are flying up at 6.30am on the day of the funeral. They are mentalists. My dad proposed flying up last night but I don’t think he really meant it especially when I told him where to go.

*That’ll be me then* but I must just point out that I’ve not quite hit £11.56 billion just yet although I am heading that way.
